Manisa's history dates back to the Chipped Stone Age from prehistoric times. With its fertile soil, Manisa has attracted the attention of many civilizations throughout history and the city was dominated by Hittites, Phrygians, Greeks, Lydians, Iranians, Romans, Byzantines, Saruhanogullari and Ottomans.

During the Ottoman period, Manisa Sanjak, located in the city, provided the future sultans with the opportunity to learn how to govern, which led to the city being known as the "City of Princes" to this day.

Ancient sources point to the Magnets living around Mount Pelion in the Thessaly Region of today's Greece as the founders of the city.

The city took its name from the Greek Magnesia. Some sources say that the city was named Magnesia because of the stones with magnetic attraction.
