It is celebrated as the "capital of tourism" in Turkey and plays a crucial role in the Turkish Riviera. The city, located on Anatolia's southwest coast and bordered by the Taurus Mountains, boasts a metropolitan area with over 2.6 million residents, making it the largest city in Turkey's Mediterranean Region.

Originally founded around 200 BC by King Attalus II of Pergamon and known as Attalia, the city was soon under Roman control. The Roman period saw the construction of significant monuments, including Hadrian's Gate, and contributed to the prosperity of nearby ancient cities such as Patara, Xanthos, and Myra in Lycia; Perga, Aspendos, and Side in Pamphylia; and Sagalassos, Antioch, and Termessos in Pisidia. Over the centuries, Attalia changed hands multiple times, including during Seljuk and Ottoman rule. The Ottoman Empire maintained stability for over five centuries until the city was briefly occupied by Italy after World War I, only to be reclaimed by Turkey during the Turkish War of Independence.

Surrounded by high mountains, Antalya experiences a climate with significant winter rainfall and very hot summers due to its coastal location. Today, it is Turkey's largest international sea resort on the Turkish Riviera. With extensive development and government investment, Antalya has become a major tourist hotspot. In 2023, it was the fourth-most visited city globally, attracting over 16.5 million foreign visitors, following Istanbul, London, and Dubai.
