This majestic peak, referenced in various languages and cultures, is known by names such as Ararat, Kuh-i Nuh, and Cebel ul Haris.

On October 9, 1829, Prof. Frederick Von Parat became the first recorded person to successfully reach its summit, a feat once thought impossible by the famous explorer Marco Polo. The second ascent was made by Dr. Bozkurt Ergör, former president of the Mountaineering Federation, on February 21, 1970. In the 1980s, Mount Ararat became a popular destination for climbers, although a temporary ban on climbing was imposed in 1990. This ban was lifted in 1998, and the Mountaineering Federation once again permitted expeditions to this awe-inspiring peak.

Mount Ararat's Vital Statistics

Optimal Climbing Season

The best time for climbing Mount Ararat is between July and September when conditions are most favorable. While winter ascents are possible, they are significantly more challenging but offer climbers a uniquely rewarding experience.

Mountain Characteristics

Mount Ararat, with its impressive height of 5,165 meters, is the tallest peak in Türkiye and Europe. This volcanic giant is composed of basalt, transitioning to andesite lava at around 4,000 meters. The summit is crowned with a glacier, and on its eastern side lies the Serdarbulak ridge, home to the smaller Little Ararat, standing at 3,896 meters. The mountain's towering presence, coupled with its glaciers, diverse geological formations, and snow-covered meadows, creates an enchanting and almost mystical atmosphere.

Access and Accommodations

The Trabzon-Erzurum-Tehran International Highway skirts the foothills of Mount Ararat, offering a route to Iran. Regular air, rail, and bus services connect Ankara with Erzurum, making the area accessible. The nearest city to Mount Ararat is Doğubeyazıt, which serves as a gateway for climbers and visitors alike. The city offers a range of restaurants and accommodations, ensuring a comfortable stay before embarking on the climb.

Essential Climbing Equipment

For a successful ascent of Mount Ararat, climbers need to be equipped with crampons, an 11mm rope, an ice pick, and safety gear such as an ice-auger and climbing tape. For summer ascents, it is crucial to have sleeping bags rated for temperatures between -5 to -10ºC, along with a wind jacket, anorak, and other necessary camping supplies.

Climbing Routes and Regulations

Climbers must obtain permission to ascend Mount Ararat and/or Little Ararat, and all expeditions must commence from specific starting points.

Climbers often make their final preparations in Doğubeyazıt before traveling by car to Eli village. From there, it is a 7-8 hour trek to the first campsite at 2,800 meters. On the second day, a 4-6 hour climb leads to the next campsite at 4,200 meters. The final push to the summit and return to the campsite at 2,800 meters typically takes 8-10 hours. Essential gear includes crampons, ropes, and ice picks.
