Computers are invading every part of our lives. Most people come in contact with some sort of computer at work, at home, and even at the grocery store. Personal computers and laptops are found in almost every business and every home, sometimes with multiple machines in a single home. Most of these machines are connected to that wonderful information superhighway known simply as “the Internet.” The Internet lets my machine connect to every other machine out there through a collection of web servers. With the Internet, we are all in contact, able to talk to each other through a variety of means and able to transfer vast amounts of information across great distances. Unfortunately, not everybody who connects to the Internet is of pure motive. As you should know by now, it’s dangerous out there.
Like any good thing, some clown always has to screw it up. The Internet is a very good thing, and of course, plenty of clowns are out there trying to make mischief. People with all sorts of bad intentions have turned the Internet into a dangerous place. Without the proper protection, you can lose sensitive personal information or have your computer damaged. Internet party poopers have many tools to give you a bad time. Computer viruses are abundant. A virus is a malicious program that gets installed on your computer. It can give somebody access to your machine, it can send your personal data out of your machine, or it can physically damage your computer’s operating system. Viruses can be transmitted through email attachments, through suspect websites, or through loading a program that you are not sure of. Viruses can sit on computers for months or years without being detected. Your computer might be infected right now.
As bad as it sounds out there, you do not have to give up hope. There are ways for you to protect yourself, and there are ways to clean up your machine if you have already been infected. First, you need to make sure that nothing else can get in, and that nothing already there can communicate with the outside world. A firewall program will take care of this. A firewall program acts as the gatekeeper, giving you control of what programs talk to the Internet. If you do not know what something does, you do not have to let it communicate with another machine. Next, you need to make sure that you have a good antivirus program. An antivirus program will first detect any virus program as it tries to load, and it will stop the program from loading. Then the antivirus program will scan your machine to see if any malicious software has already been installed, and it will remove it. With these two tools, you can feel safe roaming the vast Internet wasteland.
Computers are more important than ever. Take the time to protect yourself by installing a good firewall program and antivirus program. Surfing the Internet while unprotected is asking for trouble. In case you did not know, it’s dangerous out there.
